Quoted speech in the story can be colored so it stands out from the narration. By default every line of dialogue takes your theme's accent color. With One color per character (beta), each character speaks in a color of their own instead, so you can follow a busy conversation at a glance.
How do I turn colored dialogue on?
Open Settings while playing, go to the Text tab, and switch on Color dialogue in the Reading section. This setting is saved to your account and follows you on every device.
One color per character (beta)
Once Color dialogue is on, a second switch appears under it: One color per character. With it on:
- Each character keeps the same color for the whole journey, from one turn to the next.
- Your own character's lines keep the accent color.
- In a party journey, each player's character speaks in that player's party color.
- A line whose speaker is unclear (an unnamed voice in the crowd, a sign, a thought) keeps the accent color.
Who says each line is worked out when the turn finishes, so the colors appear once the narrator is done writing. While a turn is still being written, its dialogue shows in the accent color. Turns played before the feature existed stay in the accent color too.
It's free: it costs no credits.
Default and per-device setting
One color per character is off by default. To turn it on (or off) everywhere, use the One color per character switch in your profile settings, on the Play tab. That choice is saved to your account and applies on all your devices.
The switch in the in-game settings only changes the device you're on, and wins over your account setting there. Changing the account setting again resets it on the device you change it from.
A line has the wrong color
The speaker is picked automatically from the story text, and it gets it right almost every time. When a line is ambiguous it is left in the accent color rather than guessed. If you edit a turn, the lines you change go back to the accent color.
What are animated portraits? (beta)
Animated portraits bring the character sprites on the story stage to life with a light idle loop: breathing, a gentle head tilt, hair that sways. The original artwork stays sharp. It is the same picture, gently warped, not a video and...
Can turns be read aloud? (beta)
Read aloud turns a story turn into a short audiobook. A narrator reads the prose, and each character speaks their lines in their own voice. Voices are chosen once per journey, so a character sounds the same from one turn to the next.
